Project Description

Poindimié et ses environs

Poindimié (in paicî language: Pwêêdi Wiimîâ and means the youngest of the Wiimîâ which is a local tribe more south) is the place where I live in New-Calédonia. It’s a small town of around 5 000 inhabitants. It’s the only town in the east cost to have nearly everything (2 markets, hospital, library, banks, swimming pool, sports field….) and although the town is not that beautiful, the landscapes are really amazing.

Furthermore it has a tropical climate and a lagoon full of corals and “exotic” fishes. In fact, just below my house, there is a beach were nearly no one goes and I can see a lot of fishes and even sometimes turtles !

Poindimié, as the rest of Caledonia, is also very multicultural. Indeed for example only where I work, I have a colleague with an Tunisian name with Kanaks origins married with a Japanese descendent, a colleague descendent from kanaks and Britons, a colleague descendent from French and Algerian people, a colleague descendent from Fench and Lifou people… And in the snack they majority of the food is of Asian type with local ingredients !

Christmas in Poindimié

It’s also a special event as every night of december there is a convoy of cars with a lot of kids and music volume turn to maximum. It end the 24 of December with a celebration at the municipal stadium with the santa claus giving gifts, the traditional “buche” to every children and a firework near the sea. It was definitely an experience to see santa claus sitting in front of a traditional Kank hut with some french christmas song.
